Bottle of Backwoods Bastard Beer

Founders Brewing Co. - Founders - Backwoods Bastard Review

Posted December 10th, 2017

Founders has consistently found a way to brew awesome beers. Forgive me, but if I have a choice between another beer and a Founders beer, I'm picking Founders. This time, I chose their Backwoods Bastard. While one of my favorites, not everyone will like this beer (sorry Founders). You'll want to like Scotch or Bourbon if you're gonna try this one...oh, and the wee heavy part...they're not joking. At 11.7% and "cave aged in Bourbon barrels," Backwoods Bastard is one of the better beers you'll find.

Appearance ( )

Holding this beer up to the light I found a surprise...its actually a reddish brown color. Without the light, it looks dark brown. Don't let the photo fool you. its a mahogany red brown mix with a tan head. I poured this one a little aggressively and found the head to be full.

Smell ( )

Call me crazy, but I smell bourbon, vanilla, oak, with caramel notes. I'm not sure, but I think I also taste a little chocolate. The smell makes my mouth water in anticipation. I can't wait any longer!

Taste ( )

The oak and vanilla mixed with bourbon-carmen make this beer an experience. While the bourbon is present, it doesn't completely overtake the rest of the flavors. This beer is complex and deserves to be savored. I recommend letting it warm up a little before drinking (easier said than done) so that you can savor all the flavor this beer offers.

Mouthfeel ( )

The complexity of this beer offers a bourbon mix with vanilla and caramel making this beer heavy in the mouth. A bit chewy and full, this beer won't disappoint if you're into bourbon and scotch.

Overall Impression ( )

Awesome beer. A perfect mix of intensity and harmony.
